Loyalties and Flowering Plants

The Institute for Theatrical Futures Research (ITZ) in Tübingen's Zimmertheater is attempting an experiment in the 2023/24 season: seven premieres as a consecutive theater series called "In the Taumel of Wrath". A tightly interwoven, exciting crime story. Seven episodes by different authors and directors. Each with its own tone, subtle changes of perspective, different writing and staging styles. In July 2024, the seven episodes were shown as a 12.5-hour binge-watching event.

Premiere on February 17, 2024 | Zimmertheater Tübingen

The entire series tells of "a true story", the savings made by a hospital through re-importing cheaply purchased drugs and the resulting unsafe treatments.

Anaïs Clerc wrote the text for episode 4, entitled "Loyalties and Angiosperms," and focuses on the pharmacy manager Cecilia, who falls victim to a hostage-taking at the beginning and now decides to take matters into her own hands: the plant lover comes up with escape plans. To her astonishment, however, these are blocked by her colleague Merit. The tender friendship between the two women begins to falter, while Enno - one of the hostage-takers - negotiates with the police and receives more and more support from the public. With many absurd, fantastic elements, Clerc and Sedlak tell the story of the backgrounds of the three characters, illuminating their inner conflicts with humor and subtlety.

"When plants speak and masks fall"

Interview with author Anaïs Clerc and director Isabella Sedlak

The story is now just the obligatory net, which [...] becomes a trampoline for jumps, sketches of today's consciousness, for character drawings, creations of moods, punch lines, in short: for the freestyle of high-flying theater scenes. [...] In this fourth, the best episode of the crime series so far, they are strikingly here and there in our time, liberated, inspired and clearly having fun in the ensemble. [...] Episode IV deserves the rating: great.

The performance of the actors is extraordinary: Cyril Hilfiker in several roles, Lauretta van de Merwe, who examines Cecilia so sensitively - and Seraina Löschau, who lets her Merit Tiefenbrunn undergo a transformation from the grey pharmacy mouse to a psychopath.

A great undertaking that is paying off (...) The theatre series was a success, and the characters also succeeded in uncovering the crude machinations and bringing them to the public.

These are highlights of life plans and relationship variations – this time, by the way, particularly excitingly illuminated [...]. Completely new perspectives, after the gangster trio played the music until now.
